Hittisleigh
Hittisleigh is a small rural village to the North East of Dartmoor. The village centres on Hittisleigh Cross, with most of the houses on the road to Whiddon Down from the Cross. The church (St Andrews) and Hittisleigh Barton are a little further away towards Yeoford. There are several farms (including Hill Farm) and cottages scattered outside the village proper but inside the parish boundary. Major nearby towns are Okehampton 10 miles away, Exeter 18 miles, local villages include Bow (6 miles), Spreyton (3 miles), Yeoford (7 miles) and Cheriton Bishop (4 miles). The lanes are typicaly Devonian, fairly narrow, bordered by the characteristic tall hedges and mostly un-named (in this part of Devon it is quite usual for the junctions to be named but the lanes to be anonymous).Established for many centuries, Hittisleigh is mentioned in the Domesday Book (William the Conqueror's 1085/6 census of England more properly known as the Book of Winchester).
